Detroit Pistons assistant coach Bill Bayno underwent surgery for prostate cancer Tuesday morning in Detroit, the team announced Thursday. Bayno is expected to spend the next four-to-six weeks recovering.
The team gave Bayno a nice recovery present, winning an entertaining season opener Wednesday vs. the Orlando Magic, 113-109.
“I’m disappointed to miss the beginning of the season with the team, but obviously want to take care of my body and I thank Dr. Craig Rogers and his colleagues who are putting me on a solid path to recovery,” Bayno said in a statement. “Once I’ve recovered and get the okay from doctors taking care of me – I look forward to getting back on the bench and supporting our Pistons family that has been so great to me.”

Bayno joined Dwane Casey’s coaching staff during the 2021 offseason after previous stops with the Indiana Pacers (2016-21), Toronto Raptors (2013-15), Minnesota Timberwolves (2011-13) and Portland Trail Blazers (2005-08, 2009-11). He was the head coach of UNLV men’s basketball from 1995-2000, and Loyola Marymount from 2008-09, resigning after a leave of absence due to medical reasons. He resigned from the Pacers due to health issues as well.
Bayno’s procedure Tuesday was performed by Henry Club Health, the Pistons’ official healthcare provider.
