Detroit — Troy Weaver is at the forefront of the Pistons’ rebuilding process toward playoff contention.
After just a couple of seasons as the franchise’s general manager, it appears that Weaver will stick around even longer.
The Pistons signed Weaver to a contract extension, a league source confirmed to The Detroit News on Wednesday.
The deal was actually done months ago, according to a league source, which would date back to the offseason but the news was first reported Wednesday afternoon by Shams Charania of The Athletic.
In three short seasons, Weaver has transformed the Pistons’ roster into one beaming with youth, skill and athleticism.
He’s built through the draft, most notably with franchise centerpiece Cade Cunningham, the No. 1 overall pick of the 2021 NBA Draft, and he’s added a couple of lottery picks from this year’s draft class in the explosive Jaden Ivey and Jalen Duren.
His pieces from his first draft class in 2020 — Isaiah Stewart, Saddiq Bey and Killian Hayes — are still prominent pieces in the rebuild. Lastly, he’s also been aggressive in the trade market, especially with the recent acquisition and extension of sharpshooter Bojan Bogdanovic.
Weaver was hired in 2020 after spending 12 seasons with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
