Motor City Cruise Announce Local Player Tryouts

If your professional basketball dreams are still alive, there may be an opportunity for you within the Pistons organization.

The Motor City Cruise, the Pistons’ G League affiliate, announced a one-day, two-session open player tryout on Saturday, September 14. Participants will have the opportunity to showcase their talents through NBA-level drills and scrimmages in front of Pistons and Cruise Basketball Operations staffs, according to the team.

NBA G League teams hold open tryouts before each season to search for local talent that can help bolster their rosters through training camp, as well as throughout the G League’s Showcase Cup and regular season. The local tryout represents the first step in the extensive process of putting together a G League roster together, which can often be in flux due to player movement, injuries and NBA call-ups.

Cruise open tryouts have produced multiple G League players in the past, including Sam Peek and Malique Jacobs.

Peek appeared in 14 games for the Cruise last season and was on the Pistons’ Summer League roster this past July, where he averaged 4.5 points and two rebounds in two appearances.

Jacobs, who played three years for Kent State after transferring up from the JUCO ranks, made the Cruise’s opening day roster last season. He received a training camp invite based on his performance at open tryouts, then went on to earn a full roster spot. Jacobs spoke to James L. Edwards III, Senior NBA Writer covering the Pistons for The Athletic, after he made the G League squad to outline his journey.

Jacobs appeared in three games for the Cruise before he was placed on waivers.

According to the team, tryout spaces are limited and the registration deadline is Friday, September 13 at 5 p.m. ET. The tryouts will take place at the Pistons Performance Center on September 14.
