Game notes: The short-handed Pistons have lost three straight (Chicago, Boston, LA Clippers), including Sunday afternoon at home vs the Clippers, when Cade Cunningham played a career-high 44 minutes and nearly had a triple-double (23 points, 10 assists, nine rebounds). Cunningham has scored 20-plus points in seven straight games, making a surge for the Rookie of the Year award.
Cunningham is out for this game (non-COVID illness), but Isaiah Stewart (knee) and Killian Hayes (abductor) return after missing the past three games, as does Rodney McGruder (hamstring) after two games out. Frank Jackson (back) and Hamidou Diallo (finger) remain out. … The Heat lost to Minnesota on Saturday, without Jimmy Butler, but sit atop the Eastern Conference standings. Butler averages 21.4 points, 6.1 rebounds and 5.6 assists, Tyler Herro adds 20.9 points off the bench and Bam Adebayo collects 19 points and 10.4 rebounds. Miami should have its full complement of players, outside of bench wing Caleb Martin (knee). … The Pistons own the league’s third-worst record; they play Orlando (18-51) on Thursday.
